Shatter – Cannabis in Glass Form?

Last Updated on December 30, 2023 by Marie Kathleen

Cannabis is being legalized in most places around the world. With this legalization, many newbies won’t be ready for the more advanced sides of cannabis. It’s best to know what to expect from the different forms that cannabis can take. Today, let’s talk about one of these forms; the shimmery, glass-like substance known as shatter.

What is Shatter?

Shatter is a type of cannabis concentrate. It’s made by using solvents that separate the medicinal compounds of the plant itself. The resultant product is a golden glass-like substance. True to its name, it can be shattered like glass depending on the consistency.

It’s much stronger than smoking normal cannabis. That potency can be attributed to a much higher concentration of THC and other cannabinoids present in shatter. THC is the compound we can thank for cannabis’s psychoactive reputation.

How is Shatter Made?

The process involves putting cannabis in a clean container and forcing a solvent through it. Solvents come in the form of either butane or carbon dioxide. The solvents then separate the terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant matter. This process results in a strong cannabis concentrate that can be used to create the extract known as shatter.

Of the two solvents that can be used to make shatter, CO2 is a much safer and natural option. Butane, on the other hand, can be dangerously flammable and can cause serious injury when handled improperly.

Wannabe manufacturers are responsible for several “explosive” headlines. To make shatter properly, you need to use specific strains of cannabis, then use the right consistency of concentrate. Otherwise, you may end up with wax or oil instead.

Leave the shatter-making to the professionals to prevent future explosions.

Vaping, or inhalation under intense heating

Shatter is not smoked, but rather vaped using a dabbing rig.. The basic principle is that you heat the concentrate to very high temperatures and inhale the results from a glass dispenser if you will.

This can be a bit intimidating to those who associate glass pipe smoking with “harder” drugs. However, it should be noted that shatter is perfectly safe in proper doses.

Are There Any Dangers?

A properly-made batch of cannabis concentrate is cleaner and more flavorful than the plant form of cannabis. Since the plant matter is not present, there are no need to produce smoke induced carcinogens present in the process of combustion. Low-quality shatter, on the other hand, can have mold, pesticides, and even bits of the solvent used to make it.

In addition, the fire hazards from people trying to make their own “custom” dabbing rigs are common. Use a properly made dab rig instead of MacGyvering one on your own.

If you’re new, start with small dabs and heat at low temperatures (between 500-700 F).  This way you will get full enjoyment in the process!

Conclusion

Shatter is an interesting form of cannabis. However, with the proper knowledge, it can be one of the best ways to enjoy cannabis, whether it’s for recreational or medicinal reasons.

What’s more important is to sift out the misinformation and keep track of the facts. Only acquire shatter only from professional, trusted sources like Matrix Extracts. Lastly, consume shatter in moderation. You don’t need a lot to enjoy it!
